Fraud
A House of Lies
North Carolina carpenter Mike Pollock of GreenKind Builders (now Backyard Studios) is guilty of fraud, embezzlement, abandonment, and constructing defective houses. Mike robbed us of our money, happiness, security, wellness, and dream home through poor workmanship, neglect, incompetence, breach of contracts, and deception. After being paid for the construction of a house and garage, Mike abandoned our build as an incomplete and defective house (shell) and without even starting any part of the house trim-out or garage. Then, we learned of several personal lawsuits and Department of Treasury liens against Michael Alexander Pollock and GreenKind Builders. Mike owes victims and the government over $1,600,000 and even more when factoring in all of the projects he fails to report. In 2019, Mike stole from elderly and vulnerable individuals, including a man dying of Parkinson’s and a woman who suffered a massive stroke. North Carolina allowed Mike to declare bankruptcy to avoid refunding his victims even a cent. Two people died while battling Mike in court. Mike continued to embezzle funds after dissolving and shutting down Greenkind Builders. He inflated invoices and neglected to pay subcontractors. Mike never fixed his defective work at our build or other properties.
We invested everything into building our dream home in hopes of spending the rest of our lives in a healthier and happier environment, but Mike destroyed all chances of that. Mike promised to complete our job before the end of 2024, but missed deadline after deadline. Every time work is performed, we discover a new detail Mike installed poorly or incorrectly (see Failures page). Incredible amounts of time and money have been wasted just fixing Mike’s work. Windows, doors, siding, roofing, and the porch are just some examples of what had to be removed, repurchased and reinstalled. We still do not have plumbing or a certificate of occupancy as of August 2026.
Because of Mike’s abandoned and defective work, we paid twice for labor and materials. Therefore, we have to do a lot of the interior work on our own and learn as we go to save money. I am painting and staining the entire interior, including vaulted ceilings, and installing all of the engineered hardwood flooring, wall and floor tile and more by myself. I cannot fully express how detrimental Mike has been to our lives and marriage. I have been severely depressed, panicked and sleep-deprived for more than a year and a half. Mike’s horrible work decreased our property value. We are forced to invest far more than what the house is worth and cannot recover losses by selling. We used all of our savings and retirement funds to repair just some of the damage Mike left behind.

Mike took nearly five months to frame and attempt to dry-in. Water and mold damage compromise framing and put everyone’s health at risk. We have dangerous airborne mold. View the lab analysis report.

3 Months + 3 Weeks Into Build
October 15, 2024
We had no idea that our house framing should take around TWO WEEKS. Being paid hourly, Mike dragged out his work.
Mike neglected to install studs and headers securely, including load-bearing ones.
The rafters are crowned incorrectly causing extreme bowing and waviness in the finished ceiling.

Asheville-area carpenter Mike Pollock installs siding without the required gaps and flashing. His poor workmanship resulted in severe buckling and paying twice for labor and materials.
